Good Albums From Wisconsin Artists In 2013

In lieu of yet another list ranking the top albums of 2013 with the likes of Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson -- who made phenomenal, important albums that were rightfully at or near the top of every list of this kind in 2013  -- I present some of my favorite albums that came from my own backyard during this last year.  In no particular order, here are some really good albums, released in 2013, from Wisconsin artists:

Buffalo Gospel - We Can Be Horses
Stunning debut album from this collective of Milwaukee music veterans including Ryan Necci, Heidi Spencer and Ben Lester has gained global momentum without the benefit of the band hitting the road, or even playing many live shows at home, to support it.  Beautifully crafted songs grow on you with each listen.

Horseshoes & Hand Grenades - This Old Town
Second album from hard working Stevens Point based band lives up to their self-billing of "Progressive High-Energy Old-Time Folk Grass Music."

Nellie Wilson - Not This Time
Madison's Nellie Wilson steps away from backing band The Hellbound Honeys and evolves as a songwriter, delivering a very solid album.  Nice review from

Miss Meaghan Owens - Bounty On My Heart
Impressive collection of songs from Stoughton-born singer/songwriter who has lived in pretty much every part of Wisconsin.  While Meaghan has called Maui, HI home for the last two years, she recorded most of this album back home and still returns every year for Steel Bridge Songwriters Festival.

Jayke Orvis & The Broken Band - Bless This Mess

Jayke may call Pittsburgh, PA home these days but, as a founding member of The .357 String Band, has strong ties to his native Milwaukee.  This is his first album backed by The Broken Band, a virtual supergroup that includes James Hunnicutt, Liz Sloan and Jared McGovern.

.357 String Band Reunite Briefly
On January 10, 2013 Derek Dunn, Joseph Huber and Jayke Orvis briefly reunited The .357 String Band for a three song set (minus stand-up bassist Rick Ness, plus special guest James Hunnicutt), at a tribute concert for Richard Laferte in Bangor, MA.  Jayke and Joseph also shared a stage at numerous other gigs.

Schedule Update

Due to a long-standing scheduling conflict I am canceling my Tuesday evening broadcast, effective immediately. Tuesday’s lineup on Max Ink Radio remains awesome, with The Stoner Rock Revolution Show from 12pm-4pm, TBA from 4pm-7pm, and The Jimmy K Show (Live from the Wisco, in Madison!) from 7pm-10pm.

I will continue to broadcast live on Max Ink Radio from 9am-12pm on Sundays.

The Saturday time-slot is moving to 6pm-10pm, effective today (sorry I didn’t get around to posting this until after the show tonight!), and will be a no-talk format.

Tune in to Tommy Trigger’s Outlaw Hideout to discover Americana, Folk and Country roots, from Wisconsin and the rest of the world! Chat with me during my show at, ‘like’ me on Facebook, email me at!
